This club is for kids from kindergarten through 12th grade who are interested in the sport of wrestling. The club is run by past and present parents, wrestlers and other interested volunteers. The club sponsors a tournament each year as a fundraiser for the club and to fund a scholarship. The money that is raised goes toward uniforms, gym fees, advertising and other fees. The scholarship is given to a graduating senior who is going on to higher education. We solicit your participation as everyone's time and energy is needed to keep the club successful.

Wrestler's Responsibilities...

Wrestler's Responsibilities...

Wrestling is a sport of intelligence, courage, hard work and dedication. To be good, the wrestler has to work hard for themselves and their teammates. Not everyone will progress at the same rate, so patience is a key to success.

  • Be on time. Wrestling starts with warm-ups that are a necessity before extering yourself on the mat.
  • Always work hard. Your effort helps yourself and your teammates.
  • Eat right. What you eat is your fuel for your body and your mind.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Sleep is when your body heals and grows.
  • Attitude! Not everyone is at the same level, but don't get discouraged, keep a positive attitude and you will improve.
  • Committment. If you go in half-hearted, you will not reap the benefits of wrestling.
  • Sportsmanship. Never be a sore loser. Always be a gracious winner.
  • Listen. To your coaches for your benefit and others.
  • Help Others. Older, more experienced wrestlers need to help younger, newer wrestlers.
  • Be Aggressive. Always move forward, always move first, always move.

Parents's Responsibilities...

Parents's Responsibilities...

Congratulations! Your child has chosen the Racine Washington Park Kids Wrestling Club as an extra curricular activity. Remember, they are the ones that are out there and it takes courage to participate in an activity where everyone's eyes are on them. Always support them in what they do, whatever the outcome (win or lose). Hug them, praise them, encourage them and help them in any way you can.

  • Support. Give them the time and patience it takes to succeed. It doesn't happen overnight.
  • Comfort. Give them a hug or a pat on the back when needed.
  • Be an example. Show your child it takes hard work and dedication to get through tough situations.
  • Committment. Commit yourself to helping your child have a successful year.
  • Dedication. Dedicate some time to volunteer in some capacity for the wrestling club. We cannot do it alone.
  • Don't Coach. We have highly skilled, experienced coaches working with your child. Let them do their jobs.
  • Courage. Explain it is how you handle situations despite uncomofort or fear that defines courage.

Frequently Asked Questions...

Frequently Asked Questions...

What is a typical tournament day like?

  • The day begins with the registration process around 7:00. Register at the applicable table. You will need registration money (about $7-$12) There may also be a small entrance fee for parents and other spectators. The wrestler will also need a birth certificate and the USA wrestling club. After registering, the wrestler will proceed to the weigh-in. The tournament officials need to bracket all the wrestlers by weight and age. Wrestling usually begins between 10:00 and 10:30. Most tournaments run a round robin, which means that, unless there is a bye, each wrestler will wrestle three matches. There is usually a 45 minute break in between matches. Tournaments, typically end between 2:00 and 4:00 with awards immediately afterward. After awards are handed out, you are free to go home.

Do we have to be concerned with making weight classes?

  • No. Most tournaments at this stage group kids at whatever weight they are that day. There are weight classes for regional and State tournaments, though there enough weight classes to fit everyone's comfort level at those tournaments.

What should I bring to a tournament?

  • Water bottle, towel, wrestling shoes, comfortable clothing (to wear over singlet during tournaments), headgear, mouthguard (if braces are worn), snacks/lunch/drinks, something to do in between matches, cushion for bleachers, camera or camcorder, many tournaments have concession stands that sell snacks, so extra money is always a good idea.

How long is the season?

  • The club practices until folkstyle, freestyle and Greco State Tournaments are done; usually sometime in April.

When do I find out where the tournaments are?

  • Through the club which is in close contact with the WWF. Also, the magazine called "The Crossface," and "USA Wrestling," which you should start recieving after purchasing your USA card.

How much do tournaments cost to enter?

  • Anywhere from $7 to $12 per wrestler. Occasionally, there is an entrance fee for spectators.

What equipment does my wrestler need and where do I find it?

  • A singlet, headgear, wrestling shoes and comfortable practice clothes. You can find equipment at Rogan's shoes, Dick's Sporting and other merchandise catalogues.

What are some of the things I can do to help make the club successful?

  • Run for office, volunteer to help in the tournament and participate in the fundraisers.

What style of wrestling do you teach?

  • We start with folkstyle (high school) until the State Tournament. We then change to freestyle and Greco (Olympic).

What is the difference between styles of wrestling?

  • Basically, it is scoring between folkstyle and freestyle. In Greco, all moves are initiated from upper body tie-ups (No leg moves).
